Fiend

Based on a quote from The Rhyme of The Ancient Mariner
and the style of Emily Dickenson

Because he knows a frightful Fiend
Doth close behind him tread

Silently -- he slips away
With overwhelming Dread --

Yet closer comes the thing of Night --
No nonsense to delay
It knows that which must be done
'Fore coming of the Day

The Light -- Salvation -- near him comes
He feels it in his Heart
And yet a Darkness seems to grow
And keeps the Two apart --

At last -- a Weakness in him forms
And soon there is a Pain
Then comes the Darkness -- gone the Light
Body and Soul -- rent in twain.
